Course Description:

ECHO 8 Aerobic Fitness & Hiking Program
June 9th – June 26th

This course offers an alternative to the traditional learning environment of a classroom. Through a series of hikes, team-building and leadership exercises, classes, and outdoor activities students will learn that exercise can be enjoyable. As exercise becomes play we hope students will adopt a healthier and more active lifestyle.

During the course, students will learn how to apply good nutrition for improving health and activity exertion. Students will also learn the elements of exercise science and how it relates to outdoor activity and injury prevention. Additionally we’ll teach: map-reading and navigational skills, preparing for mountain weather, first aid skills relevant to hiking, and what gear to carry into the backcountry. We’ll also discuss the principles of “leave no trace.” All students will participate in an environmental service project.

Day 1 - Wheeler Historic Farm

Today was the kick-off day for the 3 week program! The ECHO 8 crew is very excited to work with such enthusiastic participants. Let's introduce them to you:
Mason & Truman

Bailey & Emma

Sophia & Faith

Jessica
The first big task, at least for the counselors, was getting to know each of the participants. The task proved that the ECHO 8 crew has a great group and are very excited to spent the next 3 weeks with them...on the other hand, the participants may beg to differ!
The biggest task for the participants was learning how to follow instructions & read a map. They were told to use the 2 tools to find checkpoints spread throughout Wheeler Historic Farm. Jared, one of the counselors, thought this activity would be challenging and take at least 2 hours, but he was proven wrong. Emma & Truman were teamed up and they busted the course out in an hour...needless to say, they were impressive! In respect to the other teams, they were not too far behind.
