Course Description:

ECHO 8 Aerobic Fitness & Hiking Program
June 9th – June 26th

This course offers an alternative to the traditional learning environment of a classroom. Through a series of hikes, team-building and leadership exercises, classes, and outdoor activities students will learn that exercise can be enjoyable. As exercise becomes play we hope students will adopt a healthier and more active lifestyle.

During the course, students will learn how to apply good nutrition for improving health and activity exertion. Students will also learn the elements of exercise science and how it relates to outdoor activity and injury prevention. Additionally we’ll teach: map-reading and navigational skills, preparing for mountain weather, first aid skills relevant to hiking, and what gear to carry into the backcountry. We’ll also discuss the principles of “leave no trace.” All students will participate in an environmental service project.

Day 5 - Rattle Snake Gulch & Pipeline

We would like to introduce Emily to you!

She wasn't able to attend our first week due to a trip to Mexico....aaaaaah! But we're glad to have her!

For our intro hike for the week we decided to go to Mill Creek Canyon. Our ascent carried us through Rattle Snake Gulch...fortunately we did not run into any rattle snakes, but the climb is pretty steep and can be tiring. Fortunately our participants learned how to use their new heart rate monitors today to help them go at a healthy pace.

The gulch tied into a popular biking/hiking trail called Pipeline. We took the western end of the trail and it led us to a beautiful overlook of the Salt Lake Valley.

For the most part it was a pretty easy day. The only big challenge we had to face was the heat. Forecast says the heat is going to climb during the week...where's the snow now!
