Course Description:

ECHO 8 Aerobic Fitness & Hiking Program
June 9th – June 26th

This course offers an alternative to the traditional learning environment of a classroom. Through a series of hikes, team-building and leadership exercises, classes, and outdoor activities students will learn that exercise can be enjoyable. As exercise becomes play we hope students will adopt a healthier and more active lifestyle.

During the course, students will learn how to apply good nutrition for improving health and activity exertion. Students will also learn the elements of exercise science and how it relates to outdoor activity and injury prevention. Additionally we’ll teach: map-reading and navigational skills, preparing for mountain weather, first aid skills relevant to hiking, and what gear to carry into the backcountry. We’ll also discuss the principles of “leave no trace.” All students will participate in an environmental service project.

Day 2 - Donut Falls

Today was our first hike day! The day was beautiful...the sun was out & the temperature was perfect, but the water was a little chilly. We decided to get the participants "feet wet" by taking them to Donut Falls in Big Cottonwood Canyon. As we hiked we came across several patched of snow left over from our long winter. To even see the falls we had to do a little river crossing...

Along the way the participants learned how to properly hydrate themselves during this type of activity. We happily provided day packs & hydration kits to make sure they could apply this lesson.

Yesterday they learned the basic ABC's of first aid. Today they were tested on what they remembered. Mason was a really good sport by playing the injured. For today's lesson in first aid they learned about shock. Who will be the volunteer injured person tomorrow? And who will remember what to do? Prep yourselves!

In addition, they also learned the basics of weather patterns and math...yes, math: Inactivity + Poor Nutrition = Poor Health. Pretty simple!

Regardless of all the "school like" lessons (but who wouldn't want to be in an outdoor setting rather than an indoor setting!), we all had a great time and are looking forward to our new adventure tomorrow!
