Course Description:

ECHO 8 Aerobic Fitness & Hiking Program
June 9th – June 26th

This course offers an alternative to the traditional learning environment of a classroom. Through a series of hikes, team-building and leadership exercises, classes, and outdoor activities students will learn that exercise can be enjoyable. As exercise becomes play we hope students will adopt a healthier and more active lifestyle.

During the course, students will learn how to apply good nutrition for improving health and activity exertion. Students will also learn the elements of exercise science and how it relates to outdoor activity and injury prevention. Additionally we’ll teach: map-reading and navigational skills, preparing for mountain weather, first aid skills relevant to hiking, and what gear to carry into the backcountry. We’ll also discuss the principles of “leave no trace.” All students will participate in an environmental service project.

Day 11 - Pool Day

Well, the ECHO 8 Crew softened up today and gave the participants a day of what they wanted to do...a pool day! However, they first had to complete a couple things before we set them off swimming. First, they had to complete a first aid training, which consisted of learning how to tape a foot. Spraining an ankle is very common in "active" world, so it could be very useful to them in the future.

After the first aid training, we tested their map reading skills by sending them all over Wheeler Historic Farm on a picture scavenger hunt.
Unfortunately there are no pictures of the pool party...sorry! We were just too involved playing sharks and minnows!
