Course Description:

ECHO 8 Aerobic Fitness & Hiking Program
June 9th – June 26th

This course offers an alternative to the traditional learning environment of a classroom. Through a series of hikes, team-building and leadership exercises, classes, and outdoor activities students will learn that exercise can be enjoyable. As exercise becomes play we hope students will adopt a healthier and more active lifestyle.

During the course, students will learn how to apply good nutrition for improving health and activity exertion. Students will also learn the elements of exercise science and how it relates to outdoor activity and injury prevention. Additionally we’ll teach: map-reading and navigational skills, preparing for mountain weather, first aid skills relevant to hiking, and what gear to carry into the backcountry. We’ll also discuss the principles of “leave no trace.” All students will participate in an environmental service project.

Day 3 - Dog Lake

Today was definitely an adventure! It's great that our participants take the time out of their summer schedule to hike in the snow with us...yes, the snow!
We do believe that we are calling this first program a summer program, but it appears that 'Mother Nature' had something else in mind. If you look at Day 2 pictures, then you will see an extreme difference in the surroundings, and believe it or not, the hike for Dog Lake is just across the street from the hike for Donut Falls!

For the most part our participants were well dressed for the occasion. We may have had a few cold feet, but it wasn't anything they couldn't handle. We would have to admit, however, that the best part of the hike for the participants was probably when they got back to the warm cars! You see, hiking in beautiful weather is one thing, but hiking in the snow is another. The participants were perfectly capable of performing the hike, but it's understandable that bad weather can dampen one's spirits a bit!

Needless to say, we were very proud of our participants today and their perseverance to get to the top...well done Bailey, Truman, Jessica, Faith, Sophia, & Mason!
(Emma we missed you, hope you get better!)
